Standing may seem like the most basic of activities. Yet in tai chi, it holds the key to something far deeper: motion in stillness. This stillness is not the absence of movement but the ground from which all movement arises. In our tradition, standing is not preparation for practice. It is a foundation for practice.
The Essence of Standing
We begin the tai chi form with what is often called zhan zhuang (站桩, standing like a post). Yet, despite the translation, this position is not rigid or frozen. It is alive. Through a simple upright posture and relaxed attention, we start to feel the subtle dialogue between gravity and ground, body and breath, effort and ease.
While standing, we are not striving to achieve; we are learning to listen. The body reveals patterns of tension and imbalance. The breath flows. The mind becomes quiet. From this quiet something new begins to take shape.
One quality that emerges from this quiet attention is rootedness. Rooting is the felt sense of being connected to the earth through our bones and body alignment. It is not about pressing down or bracing, rather, it is about allowing gravity to pass through us unimpeded, so that the ground itself becomes part of our stability. Rooting, among other principles, gives tai chi its calm presence and quiet strength.
Why We Begin Here
Practice begins with standing because it offers more than only relaxation. It helps us perceive how posture affects thought, how breath affects mood, how attention creates transformation.
The Heart of Tai Chi
Through this seemingly simple practice, the heart of tai chi opens. Standing becomes a gateway to understanding, but understanding what exactly?
Understanding how to be in the body with awareness. Understanding how to move from stillness. Understanding how yin and yang are not abstract concepts, but living principles within us. Understanding that real strength has nothing to do with strain and striving but everything to do with awareness and integration.
Conclusion
In tai chi, standing is not a warmup or a pause. It is a portal.
