Practicing Tai Chi offers many benefits for healthy people, but it’s also one of the best tools for stroke survivors in their recovery and rehabilitation. This matters because strokes are the second leading cause of long-term disability. The sooner a stroke survivor can begin physical therapy paired with tai chi, the sooner they can regain motor function, support their mental health, and rebuild the abilities that allow them to live independently. Here’s a breakdown of some of these benefits.
The Benefits of Practicing Tai Chi for Stroke Survivors
Stroke survivors who practice tai chi can experience significant improvements in their mobility, including:
- The ability to do daily activities independently. You’d be surprised at how much complex muscle coordination it takes to do simple routine self-care tasks like dressing and bathing—so recovering good motor function after a stroke is essential.
- Improved walking ability. Your ability to get up, walk, and sit down in a timely fashion allows you to move more efficiently at home and in public spaces.
- Increased hand, arm, and shoulder function. We use our arms and hands as tools to accomplish nearly everything. The better your upper limbs work, the more activities you’ll be able to do.
- Better sitting balance control. Good seated balance not only prevents falls and injuries, but also allows you to use your arms and hands to reach or point while sitting.
Tai chi may also help to support good mental health in stroke survivors:
- Reduction in depression. Recovering from a medical emergency and managing long-term disabilities can be slow and discouraging. Alleviating depression helps motivate stroke patients and boosts their overall outlook.
- Better sleep quality. Consistently getting high-quality sleep improves everyone’s mental health, but it’s especially crucial for stroke patients.
- Improved moods Research indicates that just eight weeks of practicing Tai Chi can enhance the mental and emotional well-being of stroke survivors.
